Dear Mike,

We would be delighted if you and the Tyndall Centre could be associated with this. We want
if possible to get all the relevant people in the room at the same time. It is a question
that crosses so many disciplines. I look forward to hearing from you and please call me if
anything is unclear. We are very much at the planning stage but we want to have a programme
which gives due weight to the problems of supply as well as environmental protection. I
know from my very rewarding visit to the centre that you could bring a lot to the party.

Every good wish

Subject: RE: Energy - Kick off meeting to plan a conference 26 February 1100 hours at the
Geological Society, Burlington House, Piccadilly

You are invited to a planning meeting for a high level conference to link the problems of
sufficient economic energy supply to world and UK demand, energy efficiency and
environmental protection, the conference to be held at the Geological Society in Autumn
2005. We have had preliminary thoughts about this and they are enclosed as attachments. It
should be noted that we are in fact starting afresh and the plan for the first meeting is
to attempt to work out what the conference programme should look like and who should be
invited to speak if we are to succeed in our aim of influencing politicians and opinion
formers on this most critical of subjects. It is our hope that this will not merely be a
hand-wringing session nor will we play the ostrich but that hard facts will be faced and
possible solutions proposed. It would be appreciated therefore if you could give what has
been done some thought and come with suggestions for improvement in the conference
programme. For instance, there is an argument for putting all the problems as a single
session to be followed by a detailed set of possible answers or we could have a coupled
problem versus solution session.

What should the conference be called? -Energy - supply, use and the environment - Solutions
for the 21^st century. Other suggestions welcome.

The committee so far RH(Chair), Edmund Nickless or Ted Nield, Julia King or Tajinder
Panesor, Energy Institute rep, Hamish Wilson, Bryan Lovell, Nick Riley, David Jenkins and
somebody from NERC (Chris Franklin attended the initial meeting). Does anyone know Keith
O'Nions e-mail address? Should we at least attempt to obtain his backing? Could we invite
Mark Moody-Stuart to be involved, on the letter head if he has no time to participate? We
already have Ron Oxburgh's backing.

How do you wish to proceed. A meeting of interested parties here at BH?

Dear Dr Nickless

Dr King has forwarded your e-mail onto me, and I can confirm that this is

something that the Institute would be happy to be involved in. We have

worked with the Energy Institute before, and would be happy to do so again.

Please let me know what the next step is and how the Institute can become

involved.

Best regards

Taj.

Subject: Energy matters

Dear Julia

Happy New (or newish) Year.

We have been thinking how this Society might follow up on the Energy White

Paper. Brian Wilson came and spoke at a meeting of the Society and

challenged the Earth science community to respond to the White Paper on

technical matters. Later we had a half-day meeting chaired by Howard Dalton

which addressed some of the geoscience issues and at a subsequent meeting on

managing climate change there was a debate chaired by Mark Moody-stuart and

involving senior representatives from Exxon Mobil and BP which sought to

identify areas of consensus between energy producers both in terms of the

contribution that the burning of hydrocarbons might have in climate change

and the role of energy producers in mitigation strategies.

So where do we go from here? A small group has been considering how we

might look at the energy resource issues, security of supply and the role of

technological change in moving towards a more sustainable future. Their

thinking is outlined on the attached file. You will see that a three-day

meeting is proposed. Although the subject matters begins with consideration

of energy resources it moves into areas beyond the expertise of this

Society. Would the Institute of Physics be interested in working with us

and possibly the Energy Institute (who I have yet to approach)?

Edmund
